‘It Goes Around the World’ : Children’s Understanding of the Internet

2019

The Internet has become an important literacy environment, even for children. Therefore, building the foundations for their critical engagement with online information should start when they first enter school. One way to start is to help children build an understanding about the complexities of the Internet environment. The present study aimed at increasing our knowledge about children’s understanding of the Internet as a technical and social environment. It also explored how children perceive the trustworthiness of online information. The participants included 30 children aged 7–9 years. The children were interviewed and the data was analysed using content analysis. We share the results f…

The interleukin (IL)-31/IL-31R axis contributes to tumor growth in human follicular lymphoma

2014

Interleukin (IL)-31A binds to an heterodimer composed of IL-31 receptor A (IL-31RA) and Oncostatin M Receptor (OSMR). The IL-31/IL-31R complex is involved in the pathogenesis of various skin diseases, including cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. No information is available on the relations between the IL-31/IL-31R complex and B-cell lymphoma. Here we have addressed this issue in follicular lymphoma (FL), a prototypic germinal center(GC)-derived B-cell malignancy. IL-31 enhanced primary FL cell proliferation through IL-31R-driven signal transducer and activator of transcription factor 1/3 (STAT1/3), extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and Akt phosphorylation. In contrast, GC B cells d…

Unknown primary tumors

2011

An unknown primary tumor (UPT) is defined by the presence of a metastatic cancer without a known primary site of origin despite a standardized diagnostic workup. Clinically, UPTs show rapid progression and early dissemination, with signs and symptoms related to the metastatic site. The molecular bases of their biology remain largely unknown, with no evidence as to whether they represent a distinct biological entity. Immunohistochemistry remain the best diagnostic tool in term of cost-effectiveness, but the time-consuming "algorithmic process" it relies on has led to the application of new molecular techniques for the identification of the primary site of UPTs. For example, several microarra…

Planning integrated care at primary care centres: lessons learnt through research in stratification tools in the Valencian Healthcare System

2018

Introduction and policy context: In the Valencian Region social services and the healthcare system are not connected. Also there is not any normative jointly regulating resources, services or aid benefits that would mean an integrated care IC portfolio.  Primary care PC centres are the closest and most trustworthy care facility for patients in the Spanish context. Also, PC is one of the most suitable resources to address needs of complex patients, as elderly and/or those with chronic conditions, through an IC approach, but there are some barriers that block its real and effective deployment. Objective and target population: Authors have studied the viability, implementation and development …

Impact of prehospital delay on mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction treated with primary angioplasty and intravenous thrombolysis.

2001

Abstract Background In patients with acute myocardial infarction treated with thrombolysis, longer times to treatment are associated with increasingly worse clinical outcome. This relation may be different for treatment with primary angioplasty. Methods We analyzed the pooled data of the German acute myocardial infarction registries Maximal Individual Therapy in Acute Myocardial Infarction (MITRA) and Myocardial Infarction Registry (MIR) to determine the influence of prehospital delays on hospital mortality rates. Primary angioplasty was performed in 1063 patients and thrombolysis in 7552 patients. Results In patients treated with thrombolysis, in-hospital time to treatment was constantly 3…

Monoclonal anti-fosB antibody specific for predetermined, nonstructural region of the fosB protein.

1997

Comparison of the primary structures and theoretical prediction of the potential antigenic determinant of the deduced Fos proteins reveals the presence of a nonstructural and hydrophilic region juxtaposed to the leucine zipper and nonconserved among the Fos protein family. To develop monoclonal anti-peptide antibodies capable of distinguishing all Fos-proteins, synthetic peptides specific for the mentioned predicted region were synthesized manually by the "tea-bag" method. Immunization of Balb/c mice with fosB-related synthetic peptide BSA gave rise to mouse hybridoma cell line K21 (IgG1, kappa) secreting highly specific antibodies against corresponding human fosB protein. Fine mapping of t…

The effect of alertness and attention on the modulation of the beta rhythm to tactile stimulation

2021

Abstract Beta rhythm modulation has been used as a biomarker to reflect the functional state of the sensorimotor cortex in both healthy subjects and patients. Here, the effect of reduced alertness and active attention to the stimulus on beta rhythm modulation was investigated. Beta rhythm modulation to tactile stimulation of the index finger was recorded simultaneously with MEG and EEG in 23 healthy subjects (mean 23, range 19–35 years). The temporal spectral evolution method was used to obtain the peak amplitudes of beta suppression and rebound in three different conditions (neutral, snooze, and attention). Neither snooze nor attention to the stimulus affected significantly the strength of…

Effects of low-gamma tACS on primary motor cortex in implicit motor learning

2019

Abstract In the primary motor cortex (M1), rhythmic activity in the gamma frequency band has been found during movement planning, onset and execution. Although the role of high-gamma oscillatory activity in M1 is well established, the contribution of low-gamma activity is still unexplored. In this study, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was used with the aim to specifically modulate low-gamma frequency band in M1, during an implicit motor learning task. A 40 Hz-tACS was applied over the left M1 while participants performed a serial reaction time task (SRTT) using their right hand. The task required the repetitive execution of sequential movements in response to sequences …

Motor cortical plasticity induced by motor learning through mental practice

2015

Several investigations suggest that actual and mental actions trigger similar neural substrates. Motor learning via physical practice results in long-term potentiation (LTP)-like plasticity processes, namely potentiation of M1 and a temporary occlusion of additional LTP-like plasticity. However, whether this neuroplasticity process contributes to improve motor performance through mental practice remains to be determined. Here, we tested skill learning-dependent changes in primary motor cortex (M1) excitability and plasticity by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation in subjects trained to physically execute or mentally perform a sequence of finger opposition movements. Before and after …
